carbon fiber bike weight
Carbon folding bikes are convenient to store in small spaces, though they can be a bit on the heavy side. Some indepedent designers are turning to crowdfunding to get their lighter.
The average folding bike weighs in at around 8kg, but they can vary from just over 8kg to up to 10kg. As mentioned above the weight of a folding back is extremely important. Especially if you are likely to spend a lot of time carrying and manoeuvring your bike around by hand.
As mentioned above the weight of a folding back is extremely important. Especially if you are likely to spend a lot of time carrying and manoeuvring your bike around by hand.
The weight of fold-up bikes can differ quite a lot when it comes to their weight and this is often down to the materials they are made from. For example, a carbon frame folding bike can combine your need for a lighter bike that is still sturdy and strong, and it is also extremely light, and can save you several kilos compared to a steel folding bike.
carbon fiber bike frame durability
Carbon mountain bikes are very durable in general. The power-to-weight ratio is 18 percent higher than aluminum. High-end mountain bike frames can take up to 700 KSI (kilopound per square inch) before they snap.
A carbon bike is more aptly described as a bike with a carbon composite structure. This means the bike is not made of pure carbon; it also has several other components such as epoxy resin. Carbon is the reinforcing fiber that could be sourced either from glass or Kevlar. It is the epoxy resin that fuses them together.
In order to come up with high-quality carbon bikes, advancements have been made in the manufacturing of stronger carbon filaments and their binder, which is resin.
I have mentioned that a carbon bike is basically made from carbon-fiber composite. The specific strength or power-to-weight ratio is high, which is roughly 18 percent more than aluminum. This means the bike becomes more susceptible to extreme loads during an impact.
Just like other materials, carbon will deteriorate with usage albeit, only after a long time. Carbon has the longest frame fatigue which enables many manufacturers to offer a lifetime warranty on frames made with this material. When aging happens, the resin matrix would be forming little cracks, and all that’s left are the connections of the fiber. The stiffness of the bike frame will slightly change in the process.
Ultimately, you can be assured that when you consider a carbon bike, it will be a durable piece of equipment. As much as you can, you must avoid moderate to high impact on your bike, regardless of what material it is made of, for the sake of not only your bike, but also your own safety.
tube to tube carbon bicycle frame construction
Once the customer signs off on the frame drawing and geometry the bike build commences. The carbon tubes are cut and mitered to length. The tubes are mitered using a diamond tipped hole saw. They are then inserted into the jig to test their fit. The tighter the fit the stronger the joint. With every frame build there is great attention to detail. We will take the time to file and sand the joints by hand to ensure the tightest fit possible so your frame is the strongest it can be.
The tubes are then taken out of the jig. The ends are covered in masking tape and the builder then sands down any rough sections and prepares the surface to ensure a good bond. A high strength adhesive is used to bond the tubes together and then its left to cure. The frame is then removed from the jig once it has reached solid state. Before the joints are wrapped with prepreg, a fillet is built up around the joints. This ensures a smooth transition from one tube to the adjoining tube avoiding any acute angles in the fibres and minimising potential weak spots.
Once the joints are wrapped, the whole frame is vacuum bagged. It is then cured in the oven. When the frame has cooled and the bagging material has been removed there is a thorough inspection of fibre compaction. Any leftover resin is then removed from the frame with some light sanding. The frame is then ready to be handed over to the painter.
carbon fiber bike care
1. Buy a torque wrench
Squeezing can easily damage the carbon fiber, such as over-tightened bolts and clamps. The handlebars and seatposts are the most common causes of damage to the carbon fiber frame. If you have a carbon fiber bike, a torque wrench is necessary, it can ensure that you will not use more than the recommended torque to tighten the components.
2. Use carbon assembly paste
The relatively small torque required for the carbon frame and its components also has a drawback that it is easy to slip off. This especially affects the seatpost. Don’t risk trying to tighten the seatpost with extra, more force, you should use carbon assembly paste. This is a gel containing fine particles, similar to a thin film, which increases friction between the contact surfaces to prevent slippage. Assembling paste and torque wrench are necessary for carbon fiber bike owners.
3. Keep it clean
Regular cleaning can give you a chance to inspect the bike carefully to see if there are obvious signs of damage. Regardless of the material of the frame, this should be your routine during riding. Of course, rough cleaning also needs to be avoided, which will damage the epoxy resin wrapped around the carbon fiber. Any degreaser or cleaning products for bicycles and old-fashioned mild soapy water should be used appropriately and reasonably.
4. Don’t reverse
For metal frames and parts, for example, during the installation process of handlebars and seatposts, it is normal and acceptable to give a certain amount of rotation or pull for fine adjustment after being fixed. However, this step will cause damage on the carbon fiber car and must be strongly avoided. The correct way is to use the recommended torque value and use the assembly paste. If the position and angle of the parts need to be adjusted, the parts should be completely loosened in advance.
5. Avoid chain jamming
Many people have encountered the situation of chain drop, especially when shifting gears incorrectly. In the worst case, the chain gets stuck between the smallest chainring and the chainstay after the chain is dropped, and it gets stuck instantly. For carbon fiber cars, this is a great “pain”. When this happens, stop pedaling immediately and avoid further exertion. After returning home, thoroughly clean and relubricate your drive system. Check your chain, including wear, elasticity, etc. It’s better to replace it if necessary.
