what is a folding bike| EWIG

We know roadies and mountain bikers sometimes commute to work and run errands by bike, but how many of us ride a folding bike?

This category of bike is one of those niches in the cycling community that doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves. Folding bikes are convenient, reliable, portable and just plain fun to ride.

But what actually is China folding bike or China electric folding bikes? We’re breaking the “folding bikes” category down by first outlining how one works, why you should try it and some of the most popular folding bike brands.

Why Should You Try One?

First, and most importantly, folding bikes are a convenient solution for areas (especially city dwellers or office workers) where space is limited. They require significantly less real estate compared to a standard road or mountain bike, they’re easy to bring along on public transportation and since they can be brought indoors, you don’t have to leave them locked up outside and run the risk of your bike being stolen.

Second, they’re surprisingly quick and nimble. Folding carbon fiber bike have smaller wheels to make them more compact, and this makes the riding physics totally different. They don’t have the same top-end speed as a full-size bike, but they’re easier to accelerate (great for dealing with stop signs and red lights). Plus, they have a nimbler feeling that’s appreciated when dodging foot traffic, road hazards and more.

Third, folding bikes are super reliable. They’re designed to be daily commuters, which means that even though they’re compact, they’re built to be durable and handle the wear and tear of high-mileage city riding. High-end folding bikes can be a bit pricier than you might expect, but take a critical look at your daily transportation costs—after the bus fares, gas mileage, insurance, maintenance and more, a folding bike has an attractive cost-per-mile that makes sense for a lot of commuters.

Fourth, although folding bicycles may be the best bikes for living in a city, their unique design characteristics make them great for many types of riding. Carbon fiber foldable bike are ideal for world travel, bike touring, and group rides.

Fifth, folding bikes are security.Being compact and easy to carry with you means folding bikes are rarely left in a place where they’re at risk of being stolen. There’s no need to leave it chained up outside the office all day or tied to a lamppost when you meet a friend at the cinema or for coffee. You won’t have to constantly worry if your bike will still be when you go to ride it home.

A folding bike removes this worry; when you head to a coffee shop or the cinema, simply fold the bike and place it under your seat just like you would with a large backpack. On top of this, folding bikes are generally less of a target for bike thieves since they’re so niche.

Low Step Through & Low Center of Gravity

Another feature that makes small wheeled bicycles great for touring or transporting kids is the low center of gravity, which is the balance point of the bicycle. With small wheels, the balance point is naturally lower to the ground, and the lower it is to the ground the more stable it is. If you want to load your panniers full with groceries, pack all of your camping gear, or carry a couple of squirming kids, you’ll really appreciate having a low center of gravity.

Faster Acceleration & Better Maneuverability

If you’re riding in city traffic, fast acceleration and nimble steering are critical to safety. Smaller wheels accelerate faster than larger ones because they weigh less, which creates a lower moment of inertia from a full stop. So, navigating congested intersections and avoiding collisions is much easier with smaller wheels. Additionally, the smaller the wheel the more responsive it is to steering, making quick decisions easier to execute. Smaller wheels also place a higher pressure per square inch on the ground, increasing tire compliance with the road surface- this is especially helpful on wet surfaces and in tight turns.

Carbon frame folding bike are not designed for speed, the riding position is upright, but folding bikes can use a higher gear ratio to compensate for the smaller wheels. So every pedal stroke is equivalent to a full-sized bicycle. There is also some efficiency in using smaller wheels, especially when accelerating, which along with being more nimble, makes for a fine urban ride. Not to mention, smaller wheels are stronger and capable of carrying heavier loads.
